Fort Lauderdale is a city located along the Southeastern Atlantic Coast of Florida, just 23 miles north of Miami. It is the county seat of Broward County and after the census of 2010, it was approximated that 165,521 people lived within the city. The city has a strong seasonal variation with the migration of the “Snowbirds” from the north who enjoy the winters and early springs on the 7 miles of Fort Lauderdale beaches.
A popular tourist attraction, Fort Lauderdale is sometimes called “The Venice of America” because of it’s expansive and intricate canals. There are 165 miles of waterways within the city limits. Fort Lauderdale is a major yachting center with multiple marinas and boatyards. Because of it’s many beaches, bars and nightclubs, the city used to be a huge spring break attraction for college students. However, since the 1980′s the city has strongly discouraged students from visiting the area to prevent the mayhem that used to occur each year. The amount of students has dropped from 350,000 to 10,000 since stricter laws have been enacted.
Fort Lauderdale also has a wonderful arts and entertainment district, known as the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District. It extends from the beach to the heart of downtown, running east to west along Las Olas Boulevard. This district in the west is anchored by the Broward Center for the Performing Arts which runs through the city to the intersection of Los Olas and A1A. This is considered the ground zero of Fort Lauderdale Beach. There has been a development in the past decade of many new hotels and high rise condos in the the Los Olas area also.
The climate in the Lauderdale area is considered to be a “tropical rainforest climate” with little variation in the temperature. Average temperatures are always above 64 degrees. The winters in the city, November to April, are warm and usually dry with high averages temperatures of 75-82 degrees and lows 59-67. Summers are hot and humid, with temperatures around 85-90 degrees high and the lows from 71-76 degrees. Annual average precipitation is 64.2 inches, most of that occurs in the wet season, May thru October .
